The XPRE458 is the version to specify when the session has to be adjusted rather than simply started. The mask is a 3D silicone shell like the XPRE448, but the controller sits on a cord, which makes room for an LCD and four separate keys.

Emitters are the reason this model exists: 100 four-in-one packages supply red, blue, yellow and a red + blue setting, and another 100 packages are dedicated 850 nm near-infrared diodes. That is 500 emitters in total, and it means near-infrared is not sharing a package with the visible colours.

On the controller, each key does one job — power, mode, energy and time — and the LCD shows the active mode, the intensity as one to three bars, and the minutes left. Sessions can be set to 10, 20 or 30 minutes, which suits clinics that bill by time rather than by session.

1. Long press the power key for about 1.5 seconds. The mask starts in red with a ten-minute session.

2. Use the mode key to step through red, blue, yellow, near-infrared and red + blue. The timer restarts at each change.

3. Use the energy key to set intensity: one, two or three bars.

4. Use the time key to choose 10, 20 or 30 minutes, then start. The LCD counts the session down and the mask switches off at zero.

5. Charge over USB-C. The battery symbol fills as it charges and stays solid when full; below 3.2 V it flashes as a warning.
